The late 1990s and early 2000s were exciting times for the Indigenous art industry, especially in the APY Lands and Western desert regions. As more people in the cities began to realise just how powerful and collectible Indigenous was, new art centres were established to meet the demand and provide artists with safe and Indigenous-controlled work spaces.
That demand has since grown globally to the point where it is recognised as a unique and important contemporary artform.
The founding painters, some of whose works are offered below, have passed on their knowledge and skills to the younger generations, who in turn have developed their own artistic styles in paint or new media.
Like the ancient cultures that inform these early works, the paintings below have stood the test of time. Perhaps they are even more important today than when they were first painted because we have gained a better and deeper appreciation of their cultural and aesthetic significance.
All artworks are accompanied by the respective art centre certificate of authenticity.
